“The Unsealed City” reimagines a 13.4-hectare block in Vienna’s Ottakring district as a self-sustaining urban ecosystem. The project proposes replacing asphalt with green spaces, reusing demolition materials, and introducing natural water and soil cycles. Key strategies include unsealing surfaces, reusing construction waste as building materials, and enhancing soil with Terra Preta to support plant growth and carbon binding. Public spaces are freed from cars and transformed into green areas, urban farms, and community spaces. Roof gardens, rainwater reservoirs, and the reactivated Ottakringer stream further improve the microclimate. Educational programs and workshops aim to engage residents and schools in circular, ecological practices—promoting long-term urban renewal and resilience.
